25th annual Art Show displays students’ creativity and passion

The artistic talents of Washingtonville High School students filled the hallways of the school on Friday, May 9, for the 25th annual Art Show. Families gathered to observe the masterpieces created throughout the school year in their classes.

There was a variety of mediums of art displayed throughout the show including watercolor paintings, oil paintings, drawings, photography and clay art. Pieces featured in the showcase were chosen by the teachers, based on certain criteria.

“The best part is definitely when the kids come in with their parents and they're so proud to show off what they've made,” said art teacher Stephanie Varricchio. “And I think the parents are just overwhelmed with the amount of work and the level of talent.”

During the event, spectators not only took in all the wonderful work but also had the opportunity to create art by making key chains, bracelets and bookmarks. There was also a face painting and temporary tattoo station, run by students in the National Art Honor Society. Additionally, these students helped with the preparation of the event, creating road signs and setting up displays.

“It's so cool seeing everyone's different artworks and all the personalities that you see,” said Olivia Malolepszy, a senior at WHS who is the treasurer of the National Art Honor Society. “It's so cool seeing what people are able to do in the school.”

To join the National Art Society, students must submit a portfolio of their work and maintain a certain grade point average in their art classes, on top of other criteria, such as maintaining their overall GPA.

Students can explore their artistic side through various courses offered in the Washingtonville district, such as Basic Sculpture, Figure Drawing, Intro to Graphic Design, and more. These offerings allow students to express their creativity through different forms of art while developing unique skills.

“We love that the district provides such fantastic classes for them to display their art and teach them different techniques to use, which is great,” said Danielle Dziedzic, parent of three with children in seventh, ninth and tenth grade. “I’m very happy with the district and all the stuff that they provide for the kids.”

The 25th annual Art Show will also be on Saturday, May 10th from noon to 3:00 p.m. Click here to read about last year’s Art Show!
