Washingtonville High School Boys Tennis Team finishes season strong

The Washingtonville High School Boys Tennis Team had an exceptional season, making it all the way to the NYSPHSAA Team Tennis Championships at the Billie Jean King Tennis Center. The team represented the Eastern Region and made it to the final four, an accomplishment that has not been achieved within the district or Section IX before.

The team’s season started with a 5-0 record before beating Cornwall to secure its first division title. After winning the division, the team was tasked with playing Newburgh to win the county championship, achieving great success and moving forward to the section championship.

During the section championship, Washingtonville had a dynamic match against Saugerties, beating them 5-2.

“At that point, we were 16-0; so, that was kind of like where I envisioned our team going,” said coach Matthew Anastasi. “I didn't really expect how far beyond we would be able to go.”

With a flawless 16-0 record, the team secured a spot in the top 8 in the state. Against undefeated Union-Endicott, the Wizards reigned victorious in their match, winning 4-3.

Moving onto the first round of the Final Four, the team faced defending state champion Syosset, which ended the Wizards’ season and eventually took another championship.

The team achieved a lot during the season, not just in championships, but with team bonding and personal accomplishments.

“This is the first time I actually got to go to a state-level event and compete, and that was really fun,” said Logan Coyman, a senior at WHS. “Getting there, we had some close matches in sections, and then again in regionals…It was a long season, so the team bonding was definitely there. We all became very close from the bottom to the top of the ladder. We all became very close friends.”
