WHS Accepted into New York State’s Seal of Civic Readiness Pilot Program

Last spring, the New York State Education Department announced that it would be rolling out a new pilot program for the Seal of Civic Readiness, an opportunity for students to invest more deeply into their communities, and to increase their civic awareness, as well.

Many schools across New York State applied to be included in this inaugural program; out of the 2,053 schools within NY, only 111 were selected to participate. Washingtonville was honored to be among those selected for this opportunity.

The purpose of the pilot for the Seal of Civic Readiness will be to:

  • Refine and revise the criteria for the Seal of Civic Readiness

  • Provide exemplars from which other districts can learn

  • Ensure that attainment of the Seal of Civic Readiness reflects the work and dedication of students who are civically-minded and driven to make a difference in their communities

As part of the requirements of the program, schools must:

  • create a Seal of Civic Readiness Committee; this committee will identify and develop options for students, as well as develop a plan for reviewing student submissions

  • promote the Seal of Civic Readiness within their school building

  • facilitate intermittent site visits that will be conducted by a NYSED employee or a NYSED representative

  • provide multiple opportunities for students to earn the Seal of Civic Readiness and track those experiences for each interested student

  • demonstrate evidence of student learning and leadership through fulfillment of the Seal’s requirements

Seniors have met with members of the Seal of Civic Readiness Committee, and applications are now available for any 12th grade student interested in attaining this unique distinction as part of their high school diploma.

From the New York State Education Department’s Commissioner Betty A. Rosa:

Civics education increases the likelihood that students will participate in political and community activities; be more committed to fundamental democratic values and principles; and be more tolerant of those who may have different points of view.

Civics education… will provide students with the knowledge and skills they need to question and engage in civil discourse and offer sustainable solutions to issues that are important to them and their communities.
