Washingtonville graduate Andrew Dempsey named to state baseball team

Washingtonville High School graduate Andrew Dempsey capped off an impressive varsity career by being named Second Team All-State by the New York State Sports Writers Association.

Andrew, who continues his academic and athletic journey at SUNY Oswego, was a four-year starter at catcher for the Wizards – a rare accomplishment in high school baseball. He also served as a two-year captain, helping lead the team both on and off the field.

Throughout his high school career, Andrew maintained one of the top batting averages in the section, hitting .509 with five home runs and 23 RBIs. His outstanding performance garnered local recognition and ultimately earned him a spot on the state team, thanks to nominations from other coaches.

“Andrew has been with me since my first year coaching varsity,  and I wasn't surprised to see him make the state team,” Luke Bruscino, WHS Varsity Baseball Coach, said. “He put in the work, showed leadership and was the type of player we could trust. It was like having another coach on the field.”

Andrew’s impact went beyond personal stats. Under his leadership, Washingtonville won its first playoff game in almost ten years against Cornwall last May. A milestone that wouldn’t have been possible without his dedication to the team, Coach Bruscino noted.

“Seeing him grow from a 14-year-old kid to an 18-year-old leader has been special,” Coach Bruscino added. “He helped make our program better.”

Congratulations, Andrew and best of luck at SUNY Oswego!
