Community Service Club

The Community Service Club fosters and promotes volunteerism among high school students to grow a deeper appreciation of their community and the spirit of service. Organized around the interests and strengths of its student leaders and members, club activities are adjusted each year to reflect group preferences and community needs. Structured as an umbrella organization for a variety of student-led sub-committees, sub-committees may meet more than monthly, often via Google Meet. Each sub-committee focuses on a specific school or community initiative, including but not limited to recruiting volunteers for district events and local charitable organizations; implementing a school-wide recycling program; providing opportunities for regular interaction between general education and special education students; and organizing school-wide drives and fund-raisers to support the community at large.

If you love video games but are not interested in or cannot commit to an esports team, or if you want to be part of both, we have created a diverse space for gamers of all kinds to share strategies, explore gamer culture, collaborate, make friends, host events, discuss gaming news, and play together. Our club also supports and creates content for our competitive teams! Shoutcasters, streamers, video content creators, artists, tech-savvy students, or any looking to learn more about and explore these areas, should certainly join. All students are welcome. GSA is a student-run club which provides a safe space for students to meet, support each other, and work together to build bridges and end discrimination and bullying. The three main functions are Support, Socialization, and Activism. The GSA welcomes ALL students, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression.

JROTC MAGIC BATTALION

OVERVIEW

JROTC is designed to teach high school students the value of citizenship, leadership, service to the community, personal responsibility, and a sense of accomplishment, while instilling in them self-esteem, teamwork, and self-discipline.

Its focus is reflected in its mission statement, “To motivate young people to be better citizens.” It prepares high school students for responsible leadership roles while making them aware of their rights, responsibilities, and privileges as American citizens.

The program is a stimulus for promoting graduation from high school, and it provides instruction and rewarding opportunities that will benefit the student, community, and nation.

Teaches students to improve themselves.
Prepares students to do their best in school and life.
Increases students' interest in their country and community.
Develops students' confidence and self-discipline.
Gives students something important to belong to.
It's fun!

SOME FACTS ABOUT THE JUNIOR ROTC PROGRAM:

Unit formations and functions are conducted by the cadet chain of command.
There is NO military obligation for being a part of the JROTC.
All uniforms and equipment are issued free of charge.
The JROTC course is an elective with full course credit.
Classes meet every other day throughout the school year for one credit.
The Magic Battalion offers both in-school and after-school activities such as color guard, drill team, Adventure Club, rappelling, river rafting, field trips, JCLC (Junior Cadet Leadership Challenge) summer camp program for one week at the end of the school year, dances and military balls, community service and parades.
You can be part of the unit for one, two, three or four years.
The classes are taught by Army Instructors, assisted by the Senior Cadets.

LITERARY MAGAZINE

Literary Magazine

The Literary Magazine gives participants the opportunity to express their creativity through the written word and visual arts. Students will create and share their creative pieces and exchange feedback. Their work will be curated into a quarterly selection to be published on the club’s website. Creative submissions are open to all high school students.

NATIONAL ART HONOR SOCIETY

Washingtonville High School's chapter of the National Art Honor Society (NAHS) seeks to inspire and recognize students who have shown an outstanding ability and interest in the visual arts. The goals of our chapter are to organize, participate in, and support art-related events/fundraisers within our school and community that promote creativity, inclusivity, and a love of the visual arts. NATIONAL ENGLISH HONOR SOCIETY

National English Honor Society

The National English Honor Society (NEHS) recognizes the academic accomplishments of high school students in the English language arts. The organization brings together students of English of all backgrounds to share their appreciation and further their knowledge of literature, fine writing, language and media studies. NEHS encourages members to use their talents in the service of others and provides opportunities to develop leadership skills. Contact the club advisor to request an application.

The National Honor Society (NHS) is the nation's premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school students. More than just an honor roll, NHS serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. Four main purposes have guided chapters of NHS from the beginning: to create enthusiasm for scholarship; to stimulate a desire to render service; to promote leadership; and to develop character in the students of secondary schools.

The Ski & Snowboard Club is open to students in grades 9-12 and provides the opportunity to learn, practice, and enjoy the exciting outdoor fun that skiing and snowboarding offer. While benefiting from fresh air and exercise, club members can share the rush of shredding up the slopes with fellow students. Participants travel to Mountain Creek Ski Resort in Vernon, NJ, at the start of the new year (January/February). Members must purchase lift or season passes at the discounted club rate and provide their own ski and snowboarding gear. Pass purchasing options are available for consideration in early October. School transportation is provided.

STUDENT COALITION

Student Coalition

The Student Coalition is the student governing body at Washingtonville High School. It works year-round to promote school spirit and build school-community connections. Responsibilities include coordinating the activities of all school clubs; raising funds to sponsor club events; staffing concession stands at varsity football and basketball games, and the school’s Wizard apparel store during lunch hours. The club and its members engage in community service acts, locally, and in the city they visit on their end-of-the-year trip. TRI-M MUSIC HONOR SOCIETY

Tri-M Music Honor Society

The Tri-M Music Honor Society is the international music honor society for high school students. It is designed to recognize students for their academic and musical achievements, reward them for their accomplishments and service activities, and to inspire other to excel at music and leadership. This organization engages in music-related volunteer work and performances throughout the school year. Tri-M is open to students grades 10 -12. WIZARDS AGAINST CANCER CLUB

Advisor: Nina Giordani Room 338

This is a student-run club that helps build and further a communal support structure for those suffering from (or supporting someone with) cancer. Using our Wizard spirit and pride we brainstorm ideas for fundraisers to raise money for our local families, The Hudson Valley Cancer Research Center, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, and The American Cancer Society.

Upcoming activities and meetings will be posted on Google Classroom, and new members are welcome at any point during the school year. Meetings are on the 3rd Tuesday of the month in room 338. Please email the advisor to join.

For millions worldwide, video games have become a treasured pastime and a spectator sport, providing mental stimulation, relaxation, and opportunities to bond, socialize, and compete. New collegiate and professional pathways have also opened-up for esports. This club creates a space for WHS’s most passionate gamers to test themselves and the opportunity to compete for the Wizards in state and regional titles, e.g., Rocket League, League of Legends, Smash Bros. Ultimate. Wizard teams currently participate in the PlayVS league at varsity and recreational levels. As with any other sport, prospective participants must try out, commit to their game and their team, attend regular practices, and represent the Wizards in school matches. WHS JAZZ BAND

WHS Jazz Band

Advisors: Nicole Redeker Room 191 | Meets Oct. – May on alternating Tue. & Thu.

The WHS Jazz Band rehearses and performs music from a variety of jazz styles including swing, rock, funk, Latin, and many others. There are a number of performance opportunities throughout the year. Jazz Band is open to musicians in grades 9-12. Contact the club advisor for participation requirements.

WHS PEP BAND

WHS Pep Band

Advisors: Ari Contzius Room 191 | Meets Sep. – Oct.

The WHS Pep Band provides musical entertainment at the high school Varsity Football home games. Typical games are Friday nights or Saturday afternoons. The Pep Band is made up of woodwind, brass, and percussion musicians. The Pep Band’s role is to entertain and create enthusiasm in a crowd. Contact the club advisor to participate.

WHS Steppers

Advisor: Lisa Alemany

Stepping is a form of percussive dance in which the participants produce complex rhythms and sounds through a mixture of footsteps, spoken words and hand claps. We make music together without having to use any instruments. The purpose of the team is to provide an outlet for WHS students to teach each other step routines and perform at school and community events.

WORLD LANGUAGE HONOR SOCIETY

World Language Honor Society

Learning a world language has become essential to today’s students, everywhere! Increasing numbers of students are studying and working abroad, and the command of more than one language opens up more opportunities and choices in the context of the global economy. WLHS encourages and recognizes student achievement in world languages, while promoting cultural diversity and expression among its members. The club also hosts events and activities that engage and celebrate Washingtonville’s diverse community. Membership is open to juniors and seniors who have 3 high school credits in a world language.
