
Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC)
WASHINGTONVILLE HIGH SCHOOL JROTC
The Magic Battalion is Washingtonville High School’s Army JROTC program with a proud history spanning more than 30 years. The program focuses on developing leadership, discipline and responsibility, giving cadets meaningful opportunities to grow both personally and as leaders.
Through JROTC, cadets:
- Progress through the ranks, earning titles from Private to First Sergeant
- Have the opportunity to advance into officer positions through dedication and commitment
- Build skills in teamwork, accountability and leadership that extend beyond the classroom
In addition to leadership development, the Magic Battalion offers a wide range of hands-on experiences and trips that strengthen learning and camaraderie.
Program highlights include:
- Orienteering trips
- Fall and Spring Field Training Exercises (FTX)
- Rappelling experiences
- Seasonal outings such as ice skating and amusement parks
- An annual end-of-year trip, with past destinations including Gettysburg, Washington, D.C. and Six Flags
The battalion is led by Army Instructor Sergeant First Class Kawski, alongside the cadet leadership team:
- Battalion Commander: Isabella DeFrancesco
- Executive Officer: Alexa Carlantone
- Command Sergeant Major: Ella Mitchell
Cadets may also participate in a variety of competitive and leadership-based teams, including:
- Drill
- Color Guard
- Raiders
- LEAD
Frequently Asked Questions
Are you required to join the military if you join JROTC?
No. Cadets are not obligated to join the military, although many choose to do so after high school.
Does it cost money to join JROTC?
No. Uniforms are provided free of charge to every cadet, and all service events and teams are free. Some optional trips and activities do have a cost, such as FTX, the end-of-year trip, mini trips (including ice skating and rappelling), JCLC and the Military Ball.
How often do cadets have to wear their uniform?
Cadets are required to wear their uniform on the first and third week of each month, on their scheduled JROTC day. The uniform must be worn for the entire school day. Drill team members are not required to wear their uniform during school hours on those days.
