WCSD welcomes Coach Daniel Malvey to boys varsity basketball team

Daniel Malvey is off to a 7-3-0 start as coach of the Washingtonville High School boys varsity basketball team. This is Mr. Malvey’s sixth year as a coach and his first year with the varsity boys basketball team.

Previously, he coached the girls junior varsity team. In addition to his new role with the boys varsity basketball team, Mr. Malvey is the physical education teacher at Washingtonville High School.

“I always played basketball growing up,” Mr. Malvey said. “I always knew I wanted to teach and coach.”

Mr. Malvey graduated from East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania in 2019 and was hired at WCSD in July 2020. He majored in physical education teacher education with goals of becoming a physical education teacher. Over the summer breaks, he’d coach basketball locally.

As the basketball season continues, he aims to finish strong.

“I want the team to always be competitive,” Mr. Malvey said. “We’ve had a really good program. Coach Rose actually coached me my whole childhood. I went to school with this son so he was my coach from fourth to eighth grade and I want to continue a lot of the principles he put in place.”

Mr. Malvey explained that instilling respect and community values are two of the main principles he carries on from his time being taught by Coach Rose.

“Growing up I was taught that the little things matter,” he said. “Even the smallest of things we go over in practice because everything builds character.”

With Mr. Malvey’s coaching experience, he also hopes to continue developing the coaching skills he has gained over the years and use them to build a successful team.

“Coaching has helped me learn to be calm in high intensity situations both on the court and off. It helps with communication at all times, especially stressful ones. I’ve also learned a lot about teamwork and being able to build meaningful relationships. This position is perfect for that.”
