A Wizard's Path: Liam Ebert

A Wizard's Path: Liam Ebert

Washingtonville High School senior Liam Ebert excels academically and athletically; with an impressive 4.0 grade point average while balancing sports, Liam’s time in Washingtonville has been filled with forever friendships and memories that will last a lifetime.

As captain and point guard of the boys varsity basketball team, Liam helped lead the team to playoffs this year. With a current record of 10-6, Liam and his teammates are clinching a higher seed and are ecstatic to head to the playoffs next month.

For Liam, being a captain means more than just a title, it’s an opportunity to guide younger athletes to be more confident and compassionate on and off the court. As a two-year varsity player, Liam hopes he can share words of wisdom with underclassmen on the team as they go through their high school journeys.

“Being a leader for them is kind of important because they’re going to be here for the next two or three years,” Liam said. “I’ve been through it, we have sophomores and even freshmen on our team. I just want to give them tips… it’s going to fly by fast, so don’t take it for granted.”

Aside from basketball, Liam was part of the varsity football team, where he is a wide receiver and a safety. His favorite memory playing football this year was during the first home game, where he scored a touchdown, kicking the season off on a high note.

During his time playing lacrosse, Liam was moved up to varsity in his sophomore year during playoffs.

Sports is something that Liam has always been passionate about. Not only does it allow him the opportunity to hone his athletic skills, but it also has given him the chance to strengthen relationships with his classmates and create friendships that he holds dearly.

“A lot of my teammates are also some of my best friends,” Liam said.

Aside from being an athletic champ, Liam is also an academic threat, taking several advanced placement (AP) courses including AP Environmental Science and AP calculus. Liam thrives on self motivation and hard work, something his parents instilled in him at an early age.

“They (Liam’s parents) would always push me, but I would always have self-drive. Ever since I was younger, I would always push myself to be the best I can be,” he said. “They would always support me along the way.”

Liam is a proud member of the National Honor Society, earning this privilege not only for his grades, but for his character as well. Part of the requirements for joining the National Honor Society is obtaining community service hours. For Liam, he accumulates these hours by volunteering at Saint Mary's Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) basketball games, keeping track of the score during games.

Looking ahead, Liam plans to attend college down in Florida and is applying to schools as a business and finance major. He’s already been accepted into several schools, including University of South Florida and Nova Southeastern University.

As graduation comes closer and closer, Liam reflects fondly on his time throughout Washingtonville.

“These past four years, I loved it,” Liam said. “I had the best time. I mean, I had a great group of friends. I can't complain about anything.”
